MEET OUR VET:
DR. GRACE LEWIS, DVM
Dr Grace Lewis is a transplant from Beverly Hills, Michigan. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences in 1993. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1997 from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. In her 21 years she has practiced in multiple areas in Texas until she settled down in the Hockley area with her husband and 3 young children, the youngest living with Down syndrome. Having a child with a disability has influenced Dr Lewis’ life in many unexpected ways. This opened up many areas of interest such as pursuing more natural means of healing for all things, and offering employment and enrichment opportunities to adults living with a disability. She has 6 cats, 2 dogs, 1 long-time goldfish, and 14 backyard layer chickens all adored by her and the family. Dr Lewis decided to open a full service mobile animal hospital to be able to provide patients with a more unique, fear free, and patient centered visit tailoring each visit to the patient’s unique needs. This type of practice allows her to break free from the constraints of the traditional practice setting, the corporate consolidators taking over the veterinary profession, and the dictated medicine those settings create and encourage. This will also allow her to balance her own career and family more easily leading to a more satisfying and enriching life that she encourages everyone to strive for. Dr Lewis has always completed more continuing education than what it expected to maintain her license. In the last two years she has spent tens of thousands of dollars to advance her education in acupuncture, dental surgery training, fear free handling techniques and internal medicine. Since 2016 she has completed 284 hours of continuing education in multiple states across the country to be able to provide for you the most up to date medicine and skills. The state law requires you complete only 17 hours of training per year to maintain your license! She has a special interest in internal medicine, with additional training in feline medicine-especially geriatrics and managing complex cases with multiple co-morbidities. She has a great interest and extensive experience in managing multi-drug resistant skin and ear infections particularly in the canine patient due to allergies. Her curiosity and aptitude to discover the root of your pet’s illness allows Dr Lewis to provide the best, most comprehensive and honest treatment plan available. She has a strong desire to heal illness and pain as naturally as possible without having to rely on heavy pharmaceutical use. She is certified in scientifically based acupuncture for all aspects of healing the body with laser therapy to compliment treatment plans. Dr. Lewis has received advanced training in dentistry from a board certified dentist, Dr. Bret Beckman in Florida at the Veterinary Dental Academy where she is currently a member. She learned advanced surgical skills for dental extractions with minimal sedation while providing excellent pain management via use of local blocks. She can provide routine cleanings along with full mouth dental x-rays to assess the health of each tooth root to determine if any extractions are in the patient’s best interest. Dr Lewis integrates time tested basics of traditional medicine along with alternative options to create a specific treatment plan with natural and alternative options that will be specifically designed for your pet’s individual needs, whether for an acute or chronic illness, or overall improved quality of life. With a broad range of modalities she can solve difficult cases that others cannot or do not have time or desire due to their high volume practices. Dr Lewis is passionate about finding the perfect balance of work and family life just as she does when balancing the health of your pet. She makes time to spend with her family outdoors, playing games, or going to the children’s sporting events whenever necessary. In the coming years the family will be supporting her son in Special Olympics. Dr Lewis is also a board member and huge advocate for a newly developing project called PawsAbility in the Katy area. This project when complete will serve the adult community living with special needs disabilities by providing training programs and jobs in animal care, vet assistant, and barista assistant positions so that they may staff the newly constructed animal shelter, dog park, grooming salon, and coffee shop. Please visit their website for more information! www.pawsabilitiestexas.com Dr Lewis in years past has cared for the Harris County Sheriff’s Department’s canine officers. She hopes to continue that relationship in the coming years in the hopes of offering those excellent canine officers exceptional preventative care and more advanced and natural therapy options for the injuries associated with their dangerous and often traumatic jobs. Dr Lewis is a Free Fear Certified practitioner, a member of The American Veterinary Medical Association, The American Academy of Feline practitioners, The American Veterinary Dental Academy and The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management. Her certification in acupuncture is through Cura Core Integrative Medicine and Education Center. |
